Through the More Good Fire Program (www.good-fire.org), an initiative of the Healthy Forest Alliance Foundation, we are committed to helping Firewise USA communities move beyond planning and into action—safely implementing prescribed fire as a core wildfire resilience strategy.
Many communities earn Firewise recognition by developing risk assessments and action plans. The More Good Fire Program helps turn those plans into on-the-ground fuel reduction projects using professionally led prescribed fire.
Our process begins with community engagement and site evaluation. We work with homeowner associations, neighborhood leaders, and residents to:
Assess fuels and map priority treatment areas
Identify homes, infrastructure, and values at risk
Define burn objectives and measurable outcomes
Develop compliant burn plans and prescription parameters
From there, we coordinate permitting, monitor weather and fuel conditions, and organize qualified crews under experienced burn boss leadership. Community members are encouraged to participate in training workshops and field-based learning opportunities so they better understand fire behavior, ignition methods, holding operations, and safety systems such as LCES.
This model builds both risk reduction and local capacity.
Prescribed fire, when properly implemented near communities, reduces ladder fuels, lowers flame lengths, and creates strategic defensible space buffers. It also restores more natural fire regimes that help prevent extreme wildfire behavior over time.
The More Good Fire Program ensures that Firewise communities are not just reactive—but proactive. By combining technical expertise, structured planning, and hands-on implementation, we help neighborhoods safely reintroduce good fire as a protective and restorative tool.
Planning is important. Training is essential. Implementation makes the difference.
