Firefighter Type 2 (Crewmember) - FFT2

The Firefighter Type 2 serves on a hand crew, engine crew, or helitack crew, performing fire suppression and fuels management duties in the most adverse climate, fuel, and terrain conditions. The FFT2 has no supervisory responsibilities and is supervised by the Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) or one of the Single Resource Bosses (CRWB, HEQB, ENGB, FELB, FIRB, HMGB). The FFT2 works in the Operations functional area.

The FFT2 performs position duties commensurate with Type 2 incident complexity and characteristics stated in the Interagency Standards for Fire and Fire Aviation Operations (Red Book).

  • Basic Firefighter Training:ICS-100, Introduction to ICS
  • L-180, Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service
  • S-130, Firefighter Training
  • S-190, Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
  • IS-700, NIMS: An Introduction
  • RT-130, Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher (WFSTAR) *
  • *Annual Fireline Safety Refresher (RT-130) is not required for the first year as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2); however, it is required for subsequent years.

Note: For the Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) position, satisfactory completion of the required training meets the position qualification requirements.

Physical Fitness Level: Arduous
Duties involve fieldwork requiring physical performance calling for above-average endurance and superior conditioning. These duties may include an occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Requirements include running, walking, climbing, jumping, twisting, bending, and lifting more than 50 pounds; the pace of work typically is set by the emergency situation.
